Algebra 2 with Trig Honors Course Syllabus
SY 2008-2009
Mr. Slichko
La Salle Institute
I would like to start by welcoming both returning students and those new to La Salle. I hope that each of you had an excellent summer and look forward to a great school year. This is just a basic rundown of what you can expect in your mathematics class for the upcoming year.
Course Description:
Students in this course focus on the geometry of the circle, absolute value, relations and functions, transformations, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, regressions, trigonometric functions, trigonometric graphs, trigonometric applications, trigonometric identities and equations, binomial theorem and probability, and statistics. This course fulfills the math requirement for the NYS Advanced Regents diploma. Since this is an Honors level course, the scope and depth of the above topics will be such that they prepare the students for future Advanced Placement mathematics courses.
Goals and Objectives:
I. To obtain a level of mastery in the following topics (taken from the New York State Board of Regents): the geometry of the circle, absolute value, relations and functions, transformations, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, regressions, trigonometric functions, trigonometric graphs, trigonometric applications, trigonometric identities and equations, binomial theorem and probability, and statistics.
II. To pass, with a level of mastery, they New York State Mathematics B Regents Examination.
Materials:
Students are required to bring to class everyday:
Textbook (Prentice Hall 2001)
Review Book (Toward end of the year)
Spiral bound notebook (3 subject or more used only for math)
Folder (for handed back quizzes and tests)
Loose leaf paper (for daily quiz)
Graph paper
Graphing Calculator
Ruler, Protractor, Compass
2 sharpened pencils (NO PENS)
**** ANY WORK DONE IN PEN WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!!!****
Homework:
Homework will be assigned every night, including over the weekend. It is to be done in the notebook, and will be checked at the beginning of class.
Homework will be checked for completeness, not correctness. That is, I will look to make sure the student has ATTEMPTED to complete every problem that was assigned. Wrong answers do not affect the student’s homework grade. Incomplete assignments will affect the grade.
If the student does not know how to do a homework problem, the question should be written out and it should be attempted, some work should be shown. If a real problem exists, the student is required to see me during the homeroom period, 8:00 – 8:15, to overcome the problem.
If a student does not have the homework assignment completed at the beginning of class and did not come see me during the homeroom period that student must stay after school THAT AFTERNOON, until at least 3:00pm, to make up the assignment. This may cause some students to miss/be late for an after school sport or activity. It is up to the students to make the necessary arrangements for this detention. Extenuating circumstances will be dealt with individually.
Homework can be found by calling the homework hotline, 283-2500, and dialing ext. 267 or visiting my web page on LaSalle’s Website www.lasalleinstitute.org .
Quizzes:
A quiz will be given EACH DAY at the beginning of class. It will usually consist of one or two problems taken directly from the homework assignment due that day. Therefore, the student has already done the problem and simply has to reproduce it (without notes) and hand it in. Due to the great number of quizzes that will be taken during the marking period, one or two low grades or missed quizzes due to absence will not affect the student’s grade. The student’s lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
Tests:
There will be several tests each marking period based on chapter content and length. Students will always be given a weeks notice as to the tentative date of the next test. Any student with a failing grade on a test, below 70, must have the test signed by a parent/guardian and retuned the next day. Failure to do this will result in detention that day until 3pm.
Final Exam:
Students will sit for the NYS Mathematics B Regents exam in June. This will be the students’ final exam.
Extra Help:
I am available after school everyday until at least 3:00pm in room 211. Any student that does not feel comfortable with the material should see me immediately. Doing this will eliminate any long term problems.
Detention:
As mentioned above, detention for incomplete homework, failure to get parent/guardian signature on a failed test, or for any misbehaving / disrespect will be served THAT DAY. It is the student’s responsibility to make any necessary arrangements for a ride home or after school sport/activity. I realize this may put a strain on the parent/guardian, so I hope this will not have to occur.
In addition to serving detention, the student must get the detention slip signed by a parent/guardian and returned the next day. A note stating the reason for the detention may take the place of the actual slip. Failure to return the slip or note on the following school day will result in an additional detention.
Grading:
Homework 15%
Quizzes 30%
Tests 50%
Class Participation
And Behavior 5%
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time through the main office, 283-2500.
I look forward to a very productive and fun year. I know that together we can accomplish a lot!
