English Department
Welcome!
The La Salle Institute English Department is committed to the individual academic improvement of each student that is necessary for success in later life. To this end, the department will seek the suitable placement of students in a program which will reasonably lead to the accomplishment of this objective. It is the consensus of the department that a mastery approach to the current curriculum be undertaken with each class of students being "met where they are currently and then taken to the next level." It is important to understand that this qualitative approach may mean that a given class will master a varying percentage of the current curriculum. Success will be based on "an individual's growth" rather than a quantitative evaluation. Clearly, this philosophy must be adapted to meet the needs of students in the "regents" and "honors" levels.
The specific purposes of teaching English at La Salle Institute are:
- To give students a working knowledge of correct, formal English, both spoken and written.
- To develop a life-long appreciation of reading.
- To develop organization of thought and speech.
The English Department uses a variety of techniques to teach the students as well as to determine a numerical grade.
