COLLEGE PREPARATION

615 - FRESHMAN ORIENTATION
Duration:  full year

Two days out of each cycle, students are taught the basic academic skills of organization, note taking, studying for tests, listening, and the like.  In addition, the open forum method allows the students to ask questions about how the school operates, how grades are determined, why we have certain rules and so forth.   The course is intended to provide a solid base of information to ensure success at the high school level.   

625 - CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Duration:  full year                  
Credit: 0.5 in the cluster

Grade level:  10

This course meets 2 days out of each cycle.  The purpose of the course is to present career opportunities and requirements to students at a reasonably young age so that they have enough time to prepare for a career.  This might take shape in a decision about a career, or it might take the preventive approach of avoid things which would preclude certain careers at a later date.

634 – COMMUNICATIONS - COLLEGE PREP, PART 1

Communications deals with more complex forms of communication including oral communication, persuasive argument and debate, written communication and media.  Due to the timing of the course, the second semester of the junior year concentrates preparing for communication with members of the college and career community.  In a group guidance forum, students explore the college / career link and work toward the development of a focus for the college process.  During this semester, students review in detail their entire high school transcript with a view toward understanding college placement and assessment.

643 - COMMUNICATIONS - COLLEGE PREP, PART 2
Duration: 12th grade 1st semester                          
Credit: 0.5 in the cluster

Grade level:  12

Communications deals with more complex forms of communication including oral communication, persuasive argument and debate, written communication and media.  Due to the timing of the course, the first semester of the senior year concentrates on communication with members of the college and career community.  This process helps to ensure that all seniors are on track with their college application process.  The final portion of this course deals with financial aid applications (January).
